What is SkyBlue Canvas? Well, it's pretty simple actually. SkyBlue is a VERY light-weight content management system or CMS. The content that is managed is the information that you want to display on your website. Here is SkyBlues' official explanation:

"SkyBlueCanvas Lightweight CMS is an open source, free content management system built specifically for small web sites. The entire site you are viewing is a demonstration of the SkyBlueCanvas lightweight CMS. SkyBlueCanvas is custom-built for those instances when more robust systems like Joomla, WordPress and Drupal are too much horsepower.

"SkyBlueCanvas makes it very easy to keep the content of your site fresh without having to learn a lot of complicated features, templating systems or configuration. You simply upload the software to your web server, and you are ready to start adding text and pictures to your web site."

What does all that mean? Well, it's nothing but an application, like Microsoft Word or Entourage, that helps you manage stuff, information, pictures or whatever. It does this with built in programming that assists you with displaying your information to your customers.

The difference between this and a full blown CMS is how much information can be stored and how limited one can manage the content. SkyBlue is the most limited in management and most limited in storage since it does not utilize databasing technology like Wordpress or Joomla (the big boys). But, this limitation is not bad by any means. It is perfect for the customer that just wants simplicity and will rarely want to change anything on his/her site. Why pay for what you will never use, right?

  • What Open Source Is (and is not)
I have been working on open source projects for almost as long as I have been a programmer. In the course of my career and my work on SkyBlueCanvas and WYMeditor, I have interacted and talked with a lot of people about open source. There are a lot of misconceptions...

I have moved all of the SkyBlueCanvas project code to Source Forge to try to better organize all of the resources. You can view the project page at http://sourceforge.net/projects/skybluecanvas/. Over the next few weeks I will be working on adding more resources for developers and end users. I am also continuing...
